Distribution of Security Fixes by Product Family

The current update cycle includes a large number of cumulative and individual patches. The distribution of the fixed vulnerabilities across the entire ecosystem is as follows:

  • Windows: 1,102 CVEs were fixed by 39 cumulative updates.
  • Office: 134 CVEs were addressed by 11 cumulative updates.
  • Developer Tools (Dev Div): 61 CVEs were addressed by 60 mixed updates.
  • SharePoint Server: 36 CVEs were addressed by one cumulative update.
  • Other Products: 32 CVEs were addressed via 25 individual updates.
  • SQL Server: 22 CVEs were addressed by 8 cumulative updates.
  • Azure: 15 CVEs were addressed via 20 individual updates.
  • Exchange Server: 7 CVEs were addressed by 8 cumulative updates.
  • Microsoft Defender: 4 CVEs were addressed with 3 automatic updates.
  • Microsoft Edge: Although no new CVEs were listed, an automatic update was released.

High-Priority Vulnerabilities and Active Exploits

Among the thousands of fixes, two specific Microsoft CVEs were highlighted due to their severity and public status:

  • 1. CVE-2026-96951: A vulnerability that allows security features to be bypassed and affects the Windows Shell. Technical reports indicate that active exploitation of this vulnerability has already been detected in the wild.
  • 2. CVE-2026-108398: A vulnerability that allows security features in the .NET Framework to be bypassed. This vulnerability was publicly disclosed, which increases the risk of targeted attacks.

In addition, Microsoft has republished a non-Microsoft CVE identified by Cisco Talos. CVE-2026-21413 addresses a vulnerability that allows remote code execution related to the Raw Image Extension.

Resources and Deployment Guidelines

Microsoft has provided several guidelines and tools to assist system administrators in deploying these patches:

Update Mechanisms and Hotpatching

The new hotpatching functionality is now generally available for virtual machines running Windows Server Azure Edition and enables security updates without requiring a system reboot. For Windows 10 and 11, updates remain cumulative and bundle all previous security fixes as well as non-security-related improvements. Users are recommended to use the Microsoft Update Catalog for these deployments.

Servicing Stack and Lifecycle Management

It is critical that administrators install the latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU) before applying the cumulative updates. A comprehensive list of these updates for each operating system can be found in document ADV990001. Additionally, users of older systems—particularly Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2—must have an Extended Security Update (ESU) license to receive these security patches.

Transparency and Documentation Initiatives

Microsoft is transitioning to more transparent and machine-readable reporting on security vulnerabilities. This includes the introduction of “Vulnerability Exploitability Xchange” (VEX) for Azure Linux and the publication of CSAF files. Additionally, the security update guide now includes “Common Weakness Enumerations” (CWEs) for each CVE to provide deeper technical context.
