The choice of Linux 7.2 is based on the expected development cycle of the Linux kernel. Since Linux 7.2 is expected to be completed in late August or early September, it fits into the time frame for the release of Ubuntu 26.10, which is scheduled for October 15. Since Linux 7.3 is not expected to be available before the October release date, version 7.2 is the latest stable option for this release.
Technical improvements in kernel 7.2
Preliminary data from Git activity and patch queues indicate several significant technical updates accompanying the 7.2 kernel. At the system level, the kernel is expected to introduce Cache Aware Scheduling and the OPENAT2_REGULAR flag, alongside various file system efficiency improvements.
Hardware compatibility is also a priority. The kernel contains initial preparations for AMD Zen 6 as well as work to support the Nova Lake and Xe3P architectures. In addition, the AMDGPU driver is expected to offer support for HDMI 2.1 FRL.
Connectivity and device support
For users of high-speed peripherals, Linux 7.2 is expected to introduce USB4STREAM, a feature to improve USB4 and Thunderbolt functionality. In addition, the kernel will include updated drivers specifically tailored to gaming handhelds, improving stability and performance for these specific device categories. As a post-LTS (Long Term Support) update, Ubuntu 26.10 will integrate these kernel improvements along with more comprehensive package updates throughout the operating system.
