Epic Games Launcher für Linux (Image © PCMasters.de)
The initiative to develop a native launcher follows several other steps taken by Epic Games to improve the accessibility of its ecosystem on Linux. The company has previously attempted to expand support for Easy Anti-Cheat on the platform and is currently rebuilding its launcher using a new framework designed to significantly increase launch speed.
Platform-Specific Improvements
Information shared during a community Q&A session on Discord suggests that the Linux version will not be a simple port of the existing Windows software. The development process is focused on creating customizations specifically tailored to the Linux environment to ensure better performance and integration.
Although specific technical details have not yet been fully disclosed, the launcher is expected to support multiple package formats, including Flatpak, to simplify installation on various distributions and handheld devices. Additionally, the project could include the following:
- Compatibility layer management: Tools to help users manage software layers for non-native games.
- Console interface: A specialized view designed for handheld devices and controllers.
- System integration: Improved interoperability with existing Linux gaming clients and hardware.
So this is a significant advancement and a step forward.
