In The Witcher 3, Geralt of Rivia once again takes center stage—a sorcerer and monster hunter who has so far battled his way across a medieval fantasy continent in half a dozen novels and comics, as well as two video games. With this third installment, the The Witcher saga finally comes to PlayStation: The developers at CD Projekt Red are harnessing the PS4’s processing power to bring to life a magnificent fantasy world that you can explore on foot, on the back of a proud steed, and even at the helm of a nimble sailboat.

The world is open-ended, 35 times larger than that of its more linear predecessor and even 20% more expansive than the current RPG leader, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. The developers estimate around 100 hours of gameplay, half of which is dedicated to the main quest, with the rest consisting of optional side quests. One of these was unveiled at E3: Geralt is tasked with eliminating a tree monster that regularly terrorizes a small village—but instead of a clumsy “kill” quest, an exciting story unfolds, offering players plenty of polished dialogue, varied tasks, and real-time combat that’s as tactical as it is action-packed.
