The “Instants” function is integrated into the message area and can be accessed via the bottom right-hand corner of the user interface. Users can add captions to their images, but the system deliberately avoids editing tools to ensure that the photos remain unfiltered. These images are temporary and disappear once the recipient has viewed them.
Sharing is restricted to certain circles, namely those marked as close friends or users who follow each other. All resulting interactions, including replies and reactions, are routed through the platform's private messaging system.
Archiving and content management
While the shared images are only visible to the recipient for a short time, Instagram stores these photos in a private archive for the sender. This archive allows users to revisit past moments or reuse the content by publishing it as a story for their entire follower base.
To improve the user experience, the feature includes an option to retract accidentally sent images. Users can also manage their inbox by muting instants from other accounts with a swipe gesture.
In addition to the main application, Meta is currently testing its own Instants app in selected markets, including Germany. This Android-based application is designed to provide faster access to the camera. The standalone app works with existing Instagram credentials and provides bi-directional synchronization with the main account.
