The Sound Blaster AE-X is based on the ESS SABRE ES9039Q2M DAC. This hardware choice enables a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 130 dB and supports playback of high-resolution audio with up to 32 bit / 384 kHz PCM. For recordings, the card supports 24 bit / 192 kHz PCM. The card also offers support for DSD up to DSD256 and uses ASIO 2.3 drivers to ensure low latency for demanding audio tasks.
Special amplification and connection options
To support high-end and high-impedance headphones, the AE-X features a discrete headphone amplifier. This ensures sufficient power output as well as improved detail reproduction and bass control compared to standard motherboard audio solutions.
The card has a comprehensive selection of connectors for different audio setups. These include a 3.5 mm headphone output, a 3.5 mm microphone/line-in input and RCA line-out connections. For the digital connection, it offers an optical TOSLINK input and a coaxial SPDIF output as well as a dedicated connection for the PC's front panel audio.
Software customization and processing
The hardware is managed via the Creative NEXUS application, which offers a 10-band parametric EQ for precise sound optimization. The software also includes AutoEq, which allows users to apply community-curated profiles tailored to specific headphone models.
In addition, the system integrates the Sound Blaster Acoustic Engine. This suite includes several processing tools: Surround to expand the soundstage, Crystalizer to restore detail in compressed audio and Dialog Plus to improve speech intelligibility in movies and media. A Smart Volume function also ensures consistent volume levels across different applications.
