The reason for this change is AI. According to reports, the improvements in neural processing were so significant that Apple decided to integrate these advancements directly into the M7 family. Instead of spending time finalizing a complete M6 product lineup, they’re taking a leap forward to make the new AI capabilities available to users more quickly.

A 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M6 chip is expected to launch later this year. After that, the company will move quickly toward the next generation. The base M7 chip is expected in the first half of 2027. It won’t be long before the more powerful versions follow; the M7 Pro and M7 Max are scheduled for the second half of 2027.

The shortened development cycle is also affecting current hardware. We can expect the M5 chip in October 2025, with its Pro and Max variants following in March 2026. The M5 Ultra is set to hit the market by the end of 2026.

Then things will get really exciting with the M7 Ultra. This special chip, scheduled for release in 2028, was developed to deliver a massive leap in AI performance. It’s not just intended for laptops or desktops. There are plans to use the M7 Ultra to power Apple Intelligence servers by 2029.
