This change is a strategic response to the EU F-Gas Regulation, which will restrict the import of certain refrigerants starting in 2027. The key factor driving this transition is the difference in global warming potential (GWP) between the two substances: While R32 has a GWP of 675, propane’s GWP is only 0.02, which significantly reduces the unit’s environmental impact. Details on these changes were presented at the IFA trade show in Berlin.

Technical Improvements and Smart Home Integration

Beyond the refrigerant change, the updated Portasplit model includes several hardware and software optimizations. To improve smart home compatibility, Midea has integrated a new wireless chip that supports the Matter 1.6 standard, enabling the unit to work within ecosystems from various manufacturers.

Maintenance has also been made easier. The indoor unit now features a removable condensate filter that users can clean manually. This change addresses a known issue with earlier models, where the buildup of biofilms caused by airborne germs could lead to a P1 system error.

Additional changes have been made to the exterior. A redesigned base plate has been installed to ensure that condensate drains reliably and sufficient pressure is maintained, even when longer hoses are used. In addition, the company is exploring the development of a retrofit kit designed to prevent condensate buildup entirely, though the market launch of this accessory has not yet been confirmed.

Midea Portasplit Purchase Options and Transition Timeline

The propane-powered Portasplit model is scheduled to launch on the European market in the summer of 2027. Following this launch, a modified “cool-only” version without a heating function will be introduced.

The current R32 models will remain available for the time being. Midea plans to continue shipping the existing models to Europe through the end of 2026. Under current guidelines, dealers may sell their remaining stock of R32 units through the end of 2027. Prices for the new R290 models have not yet been announced.
