The R1 uses a 55-W CO₂ laser, which differs from diode lasers in its ability to process clear acrylic and glass. The system can cut through materials up to 18 mm thick for walnut plywood and 20 mm thick for acrylic. The standard work area is 600 x 300 mm, but can be extended to a length of 3,000 mm using the optional conveyor belt accessory, enabling the production of larger components such as furniture parts. The R1 can process wood, clear acrylic, and leather, and also offers engraving capabilities for glass, stone, and coated metals.

Automated Laser Alignment System

One of the greatest technical challenges with CO₂ lasers is aligning the beam across multiple mirrors to the lens. Misalignment typically results in reduced cutting performance and precision, which usually requires manual calibration using thermal paper and manual readjustments.

The R1 solves this problem with an automated alignment process. Using a laser alignment sensor, the machine detects beam deviations and corrects them using motorized mirror actuators. This process reduces setup time to about one minute and eliminates the need for manual mirror adjustment.

TriSense Integration System

To ensure precise execution, the R1 utilizes the TriSense system, which integrates cameras, lasers, and encoders to control the relationship between the design and the physical material:

  • Localization: The system uses a BirdsEye camera for the entire work area, a toolhead camera for specific workpiece identification, and a pinpoint laser to mark exact positions on the material.
  • Surface Measurement: An integrated distance-measuring laser detects the height of the material’s surface, allowing the system to automatically adjust the focus for both flat and curved surfaces.
  • Motion Tracking: XY encoders provide real-time feedback on the toolhead’s position to ensure the accuracy of the motion path.

Thanks to these features, the R1 can engrave curved objects and trace printed contours with an accuracy of less than 0.2 mm.

Motion Control and Algorithmic Optimization

The R1 adapts motion control algorithms—originally developed for 3D printing—to the requirements of laser cutting:

  • Vibration Compensation: The system models mechanical resonance to eliminate jagged edges that often occur during rapid changes in direction, ensuring sharp lines even in tight curves.
  • Speed-Synchronized Power: To prevent uneven burn-in (where slow sections are darker than fast ones), the R1 modulates the laser power in sync with the motion speed, ensuring a uniform color tone at speeds of up to 1000 mm/s.
  • Vision Encoder: This optional component measures and corrects mechanical drift over time, ensuring absolute motion accuracy of less than 0.1 mm over the entire 600 mm travel range.

Safety Specifications and Environmental Control

The R1 is classified as a Class 1 laser in accordance with IEC 60825-1 standards, meaning that the beam is completely contained within the device during normal operation, so safety goggles are not required in a closed configuration.

Heat and smoke management is handled by a cross-flow ventilation system. A dedicated fan on the right side ensures a steady airflow that removes smoke and fumes from the chamber. For additional air purification, the E1 Pro air purifier can be connected to the exhaust port, which uses activated carbon filters to remove fine dust and odors.

Additional safety measures include:

  • An automatic laser shut-off triggered by opening the device cover.
  • Integrated flame monitoring sensors.
  • An optional automatic fire suppression system for autonomous firefighting.
  • A physical emergency shut-off switch to cut off the power supply.

The R1 integrates into the existing Bambu Lab software environment, uses the Bambu Suite for Windows and macOS, and is connected via a unified Bambu account as well as the MakerWorld community. This allows users who already operate Bambu Lab 3D printers to maintain a consistent workflow across various manufacturing tools.
