Understanding the RAR format

Developed by Eugene Roshal, the RAR format is a proprietary archiving system designed to reduce file size and organize multiple folders into a single compressed package. One of its main advantages is the ability to implement password protection, ensuring that sensitive data remains encrypted during transfer. Since it is a proprietary format associated with the WinRAR archiving program, Apple has not integrated native decompression support into the macOS ecosystem.

RAR vs. ZIP - Technical differences

Although both formats serve the purpose of data compression, they differ significantly in terms of technical capabilities and accessibility.

ZIP files are widely considered the universal standard due to their native support on almost all operating systems. However, RAR offers several technical advantages. It typically achieves a higher compression ratio, which means that files take up less disk space than in a ZIP container. In addition, RAR uses more robust encryption standards for security. With ZIP, however, you can also encrypt.

A key feature of RAR is the ability to create spanned archives. This allows a user to split a large archive into multiple smaller files, making it easier to transfer data across networks or storage devices with strict file size limits. In addition, RAR supports the retention of NTFS file system attributes, including access control lists (ACL) and streams. In contrast, ZIP files are limited to basic DOS attributes, which limits their usefulness for complex system administration tasks.

Opening RAR files on the Mac

Since macOS does not provide a built-in tool for this format, users must rely on alternative methods to access their data.

Third-party applications

The most common approach is to install a third-party unzip program. Various applications available for macOS can handle the decompression of RAR files and often offer a graphical user interface for those who don't want to use a command line environment. However, many cost money, which many don't want to pay for a file.

Unzip RAR files for free with board tools

For users who do not want to install additional software, macOS offers a way to extract these archives via the Terminal. By using the integrated tar utility, users can extract the contents of a RAR archive by entering the following command in the terminal: tar -xvf filename.rar

This method eliminates the need for third-party GUI applications and utilizes the underlying Unix-based architecture of the system to retrieve the compressed data.
