Since 2018, Pornhub has banned content that contains deepfakes as it is considered non-consensual. The app in question is available as a web application or as an Android APK, bypassing the strict regulations of the official app stores. According to a report by 404 Media, similar apps have also been removed from the Apple App Store. The developers behind the app, who are from Belarus and Russia, use AI-generated images to disguise their true identity.
Nudify apps gaining popularity
This incident has heightened ongoing concerns regarding Nudify apps, which are increasingly being used to create realistic nude images without the consent of the subject. These apps have seen a sharp increase in traffic and have come under fire after deepfake content from celebrities such as Taylor Swift circulated online, challenging platforms to keep up with content moderation.
In response to the growing threat posed by these technologies, the EU is working on new regulations to criminalize the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, including AI-generated content. The US has also been considering a legislative proposal on the same topic since 2023, reflecting the global trend towards stricter control of digital sexual exploitation.
