The End of Windows 10 Is Approaching
The transition to the ESU phase will take place after general support expires on October 14. While the operating system will remain functional and continue to run existing software, it will no longer receive new features, routine system improvements, or standard technical support. The ESU program was specifically designed to bridge the security gap for those who cannot immediately upgrade to Windows 11.
In enterprise environments, migrating to a newer platform often presents a complex logistical challenge affecting thousands of workstations. The ESU program enables these organizations to maintain a secure environment while phasing out older hardware or conducting large-scale software deployments. However, the program is intended as a short-term measure, as long-term reliance on ESUs can lead to software incompatibilities and unsupported system components.
ESU Enrollment Options and Pricing
Microsoft has introduced several ways for users to enroll in the Extended Security Update program. While a standard fee of $30 was previously announced, new alternative methods now allow for free enrollment. Users can now gain access to ESUs without payment by either syncing their PC settings via Windows Backup or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
In the European Economic Area, the ESU package is available free of charge for one year; however, users must be signed in with a Microsoft account to access it.
Rollout Schedule and Virtualization Support
The technical rollout of the enrollment wizard is taking place in phases. The tool is currently available to Windows Insiders; a broader release is planned for July, and full public availability is expected by mid-August. This wizard will be integrated into Windows Settings and delivered via system notifications.
In addition, Microsoft is integrating ESU support into its cloud infrastructure. Devices running Windows 10 that access Windows 11 Cloud PCs via Windows 365, as well as certain virtual machines, will receive these critical security updates at no additional cost. This policy applies specifically to users within the EEA.
