WhatsApp Username Reservation and Introduction of Usernames

The company is currently rolling out a reservation phase during which users can secure their preferred usernames before the feature is fully launched. This process is being introduced in phases; users will receive a notification as soon as they are eligible to reserve a username.

Those who already have access can set up their username under “Settings” → “Account” → “Username.” The system supports unique identifiers ranging from 3 to 35 characters in length. While creating a username is optional, the early reservation phase is designed to ensure that a broad user base has a fair chance to claim specific names.

Integration into the Meta Ecosystem

To simplify the process for creators, organizations, and small businesses, WhatsApp allows users to sync usernames from other Meta platforms. Users with accounts on Instagram or Facebook can claim their existing usernames on WhatsApp, provided the name hasn’t already been registered by another user.

Privacy Settings and Search Restrictions

Unlike many other social messaging platforms, WhatsApp will not offer a public directory or search suggestions for these usernames. To start a conversation, the sender must know the recipient’s exact username.

In addition, an optional username blocking feature will be introduced to provide additional protection against spam. This mechanism ensures that only authorized individuals can contact a user via their username.

Impact on the Visibility of User Data

Once the system is fully operational in the coming months, it will significantly change the way personal data is shared during initial contact. When a user with a configured username sends a message to another person or a business for the first time, their phone number remains hidden, thereby preventing the disclosure of private contact information to strangers.
