The Smart Energy 201 features a compact design measuring 92 x 92 x 92 mm, allowing it to fit into standard power strips without blocking adjacent outlets. The external user interface has been simplified to a single LED and a single button. Despite its small size, the plug is designed for high-load applications. It uses an enhanced relay that supports a maximum current of 16 A and a power load of up to 3,680 W, making it compatible with energy-intensive devices. In addition, the device has low power consumption, remaining below 0.2 W.
Energy Analysis and Automation
A core feature of the Smart Energy 201 is the precise measurement and recording of power consumption. Through the FRITZ!App Smart Home, you can access real-time consumption data and historical trends. For users with multiple devices, the MyFRITZ!Net service enables a comparative analysis of energy consumption across different plugs within the same household to identify potential savings. The device supports several automation routines to improve energy efficiency and home security:
- Usage-Based Control: Devices can be automatically turned on, off, or set to standby mode based on specific usage thresholds.
- Time-Based Schedules: Users can program specific on and off times for connected devices.
- Presence simulation: The power outlet can perform random switching operations to simulate occupancy while the user is on vacation.
- Geofencing: With the FRITZ!App Smart Home, users can define geographic zones. The power outlet automatically turns connected devices on or off when the user enters or leaves these defined areas.
Connectivity and Integration into the Ecosystem
The Smart Energy 201 uses the DECT standard for secure, encrypted communication with the home network. Initial setup is performed either via the FRITZ!Box interface or the FRITZ!App Smart Home. Once configured, the device can be controlled via smartphone, tablet, or PC, whether you’re at home or on the go. The smart outlet supports voice control via Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. This feature requires a Matter-compatible bridge, specifically the FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro or the FRITZ!Smart Gateway.
Software Maintenance and Sustainability
The hardware is designed for long-term use and receives automatic over-the-air updates to provide new features and security patches. The company’s sustainability strategy includes the hardware’s low power consumption as well as the ability to reuse older FRITZ!Box models as smart home hubs or repeaters, thereby extending the lifecycle of existing electronics.
