The system used the native 12V-2x6 cable, which is equipped with an ASRock TempGuard system complete with an NTC temperature sensor. This safety mechanism is designed to monitor the temperature and shut down the system before the connectors reach a critical melting point. In this case, the connector failed and melted even though both ends of the cable were firmly plugged in.

The technician’s technical analysis suggests that the fault may be due to incorrect placement of the sensor. It is reported that the NTC sensor is attached to the cable’s ground wire rather than the 12-V wire. Since the sensor is not positioned on the wire through which the main current flows, it likely could not detect the rising heat in time to trigger a system shutdown.

While the power supply sustained significant damage, the $15,000 GPU remained functional, with the thermal damage limited to the side of the power supply. Thus, the drama surrounding the connector continues, and NVIDIA has not responded.
