The most significant technical improvement of the PMD2X over its predecessor, the PMD2, is the shift from channel-based measurement to per-wire measurement for 12VHPWR and 12V-2x6 connectors. While the previous model provided a total current reading for the entire connector, the PMD2X can measure the current flowing through individual wires. This feature allows users to analyze current distribution across the connector, which is crucial for identifying uneven load distribution or potential contact issues that could lead to hardware failures.

Technical Specifications and Rated Power

The PMD2X also features a variety of input options to support different motherboard and component configurations:

  • 8-pin EPS inputs: Two connectors, each rated for up to 28 A.
  • B PCIe 8-pin connectors: Three connectors, each rated for up to 27 A.
  • ATX 24-pin input: Included for comprehensive monitoring of the system power supply.
  • 12VHPWR/12V 2x6 connector: Rated for a maximum continuous load of 51 A.

Data can be monitored in real time via an integrated 2.4-inch OLED screen or logged via a USB-C interface for later analysis. Additionally, the device features configurable settings for audible power alerts, data averaging, and overcurrent protection.

Expansion and Wireless Connectivity

A new hardware feature of the PMD2X is the addition of a 2x7-pin socket designed for Seeed Studio XIAO boards. To enable wireless monitoring, ElmorLabs includes a XIAO ESP32-C6 module with the device. This integration allows users to implement custom wireless connectivity and remote monitoring without the need for an external controller board. On the software side, the device is supported by version 2.0.0.3 of the PMD software, an update to version v2.0.0.0, which was used with the original PMD2.

PMD2X Price

The price for the PMD2X is $109, which represents a slight increase from the $99 price of the original model.
