Distance Limitations of Standard Ethernet
In traditional network environments, extending connectivity beyond 100 meters typically requires the installation of fiber-optic cables and the provision of a separate power supply at the remote location. The new long-range switching system eliminates the need for these additional components by transmitting Power over Ethernet (PoE) and data over a single cable. This feature was specifically designed for use with remote hardware such as surveillance cameras, access control devices, and IoT sensors in locations where a local power supply is unavailable or difficult to install.
Hardware Specifications and Power Supply
The hardware features eight dedicated long-range ports that allow for the simultaneous connection of multiple remote devices. To support hardware with high power consumption, the switch offers a PoE output power of up to 90 W per port. This power capacity ensures that energy-intensive devices can operate at full capacity even at the farthest ends of the 800-meter range.
Outdoor Use and Surge Protection
For installations in exposed environments, the system includes a special outdoor endpoint. This component is designed to maintain signal integrity over long distances while protecting the network from electrical fluctuations. The endpoint features built-in surge protection, which reduces the risk of hardware failure caused by power surges in outdoor environments. This allows the network infrastructure to be extended to the very edge of a site without compromising the security of the central switch devices.
System Integration and Management
The long-distance switching hardware is fully integrated into the UniFi ecosystem. This allows administrators to manage both wired and wireless endpoints through a single building management system. By consolidating network management and physical security into a single interface, the system provides a centralized overview of the remote infrastructure.
The software implementation is license-free, which means there are no recurring subscription fees for managing the long-range ports or the integrated security features.
