When you pick up the recorder for the first time, you immediately notice its comfortable weight and excellent build quality. SanDisk has opted for a premium metal housing in a stylish, matte metallic sky blue. The housing feels high-quality, dissipates heat well, and is ideally suited for outdoor use. The included USB-C cable also fits seamlessly into this design. It’s intentionally kept short and flat so that no long cable loops get in the way on the back of the smartphone, and it appears extremely robust thanks to its construction and sturdy connector housings.

A closer look at this small device reveals its fine details. On the right side of the casing is a small, crisp-clicking on/off switch that allows you to completely power down the reader without having to unplug the cable. The USB-C port is recessed on the bottom, while the slot for the CFexpress Type B memory card is located on the left side. Test Setup

To put the SanDisk recorder’s maximum performance to the test, we’re using a tried-and-true setup. Testing on a computer reveals whether the card reader can consistently deliver the performance promised by the manufacturer or whether it falters under load—even though the device was, of course, primarily designed for mobile use with a smartphone.

Practical Use and Measurement Results

In practical use, it quickly becomes apparent that the magnetic design works exceptionally well here. The recorder snaps into place on the back of the iPhone with a satisfying click, and the memory card also locks into place with a noticeable click. The software integration runs absolutely smoothly. As soon as the cable is connected, the CFexpress card appears as an external drive in the Files app.

When we enable the Apple ProRes option in the iOS camera settings, we quickly hit a limit while filming in 4K at 60 frames per second. Apple generally does not allow this extremely high frame rate in the ProRes format on the internal storage. Only when we connect the Storage Dock (or, alternatively, another external storage device) does the iPhone actually allow this format, and every minute of video is saved directly to the memory card.

A look at the storage capacity shows just how resource-intensive the professional ProRes Log format is. While standard 4K footage takes up only a few hundred megabytes per minute, ProRes Log 4K at 60 FPS on our iPhone 15 Pro devours a whopping 10.7 GB per minute. Equipped with our 512-GB memory card, the iPhone displays a remaining recording time of just 36 minutes (on another iPhone 16 Pro Max at 120 FPS, it’s 18 minutes). Since the card reader also draws a fair amount of power and occupies the iPhone’s only USB-C port, a suitable setup with an external power bank is definitely recommended for longer shoots.

Let’s now take a look at the benchmark results from the desktop setup. Since Apple Silicon Macs unfortunately don’t natively support the dual-lane USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 standard at 20 Gbit/s, transfer rates via the Thunderbolt 4 port drop to the USB 3.2 Gen 2 limit of 10 Gbit/s.

In our tests on the MacBook Pro, we achieved the following results:

These results demonstrate that the card fully exploits the physical limits of the interface on the Mac and transfers data extremely quickly. The fact that both read and write speeds consistently hover just above the 1,000 MB/s mark proves the outstanding efficiency of the built-in controller and provides more than enough buffer for ProRes recordings. SanDisk also impresses us with its heat dissipation. Although CFexpress cards are known to get very hot under load, the aluminum housing dissipates the heat exceptionally well. Away from the magnetic smartphone backplate, the solid metal housing also proves to be very adaptable. Those working with a professional cage can simply ignore MagSafe and screw the dock directly onto a camera rig using the integrated quarter-inch thread with a practical ARRI lock.

Overall, the device made a very polished impression in our hands-on test and performed its tasks with absolute reliability. The recorder seems sturdy enough for rugged outdoor use, and we’re thoroughly satisfied with its performance as well, which brings us directly to our final conclusion.

Conclusion

The SanDisk PRO-CINEMA CFexpress Type B Recorder is a superbly crafted and cleverly designed tool for discerning smartphone filmmakers. With its rugged aluminum housing, secure MagSafe connection, and seamless iOS integration for ProRes recording, the device fully impressed us in our hands-on test. The soft silicone pad on the back perfectly protects the phone from scratches. However, the recorder isn’t an all-around solution for everyone, and its high power consumption during ProRes recording makes an additional power bank almost essential for longer shoots

In terms of speed, the dock can theoretically support the fast USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 standard, but is limited to around 1,000 MB/s due to the Mac’s interface limitations. But that’s not a big deal and isn’t SanDisk’s fault, since this limit was fully utilized in our benchmarks without any slowdowns, which provides more than enough buffer for any video stream and definitely speaks in favor of the SanDisk recorder.

With a suggested retail price of 129.99 euros (excluding the memory card), the device is specifically aimed at professional creators and camera enthusiasts. Anyone who already owns fast CFexpress cards for their DSLM and wants to use their smartphone as a serious video camera will find a truly reliable storage solution here that eliminates storage space issues. This is especially true for demanding formats like ProRes in 4K at 60 or 120 frames per second, which Apple has completely blocked for internal storage and which absolutely require a fast external storage medium. Thanks to the universal USB-C port and the integrated quarter-inch thread with ARRI anti-rotation lock, the recorder not only works with the iPhone via MagSafe but can also be flexibly mounted on professional camera rigs or compatible Android smartphones—although, due to design limitations, you’ll have to forgo the magnetic MagSafe mount or use appropriate cases. However, for those who only use their phone for occasional everyday or vacation videos, don’t need these formats at all, and aren’t already part of the specialized CFexpress ecosystem, this recorder isn’t a must-have and is simply too expensive for everyday use.
