Updated Specification Framework
The latest version includes a comprehensive set of updates across various categories:
- Base Specification: NVMe 2.4.
- Command Set Specifications: Updates for NVM (1.3), ZNS (1.5), Key Value (1.4), Subsystem Local Memory (1.3), and Computational Programs (1.3).
- Transport Specifications: Revisions to NVMe over PCIe (1.4), RDMA (1.3), and TCP (1.3).
- Management and Boot: NVMe-MI 2.2 and NVMe Boot 1.4 specifications.
Security and Post-Quantum Cryptographic Methods
A key focus of the update is the integration of post-quantum cryptographic methods (PQC). This security model is designed to protect data from the computational capabilities of future quantum computers, which may be able to circumvent current encryption methods. By using NIST-approved quantum-resistant algorithms, the protocol strengthens end-to-end data protection between the host and the SSD.
Storage Management Optimizations
The new specifications introduce two significant management enhancements aimed at increasing operational efficiency in virtualized and multi-tenant environments:
Migration of the Exported PCIe NVM Subsystem
This feature extends virtualization to locally connected PCIe SSDs. By abstracting physical drives into host-defined virtualized subsystems, the technology enables seamless mobility of virtual machines (VMs). This reduces the need for storage reconfigurations or complex hypervisor emulation for cloud service providers.
Hardware-Level Rate Limiting
To ensure consistent application performance, new rate-limiting features implement controller-based Quality of Service (QoS). By directly enforcing bandwidth and IOPS limits on the NVMe SSDs, this approach mitigates resource conflicts and stabilizes performance in shared environments.
The updates also introduce features designed to support long-term hardware reliability and maintenance:
Integrated Voltage Monitoring
New voltage telemetry provides better insight into device status. The system now supports configurable thresholds for overvoltage and undervoltage and provides real-time alerts and historical logs to detect power supply anomalies before they lead to hardware failures.
Restoring Factory Settings
To simplify troubleshooting and configuration management, hosts can now reset an NVMe subsystem to its original factory settings. This feature ensures consistency in system configurations and streamlines the recovery process during maintenance.
