Processor and connectivity improvements

The most notable internal change is the expected switch to the A20 Pro chip. According to rumors, this processor will be based on TSMC's first-generation 2nm process, moving away from the 3nm architecture of previous versions. This change should bring measurable improvements in both processing speed and energy efficiency.

Connectivity is also expected to evolve with the introduction of the C2 cellular modem. This customized third-generation chip is rumored to enable 5G over satellite, allowing users to surf the internet in areas without traditional cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. In addition, the devices will probably be equipped with the N2 chip to manage Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 protocols.

Display and external design

The visual presence of the front display is expected to change with a smaller Dynamic Island. This reduction in size will be made possible by moving the Face ID flood illuminator under the glass. To improve energy consumption, Apple is rumored to be using LTPO+ display technology for the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screens.

On the back, the MagSafe area of the Ceramic Shield is expected to have a seamless, matte appearance, eliminating the current two-tone look. The color palette is also expected to change, with “Dark Cherry” being introduced as the primary special edition color alongside ‘Silver’, “Dark Gray” and “Light Blue”.

Camera hardware and user interface

The 48-megapixel Fusion camera could introduce a variable aperture system. This hardware change would allow the adjustment of light entering the sensor and offer more precise control of depth of field. However, the practical implications of this feature remain controversial due to the inherent size limitations of smartphone sensors.

The physical user interface is also set to be simplified. The camera control button could be redesigned to be based solely on pressure sensitivity, eliminating the tactile and haptic feedback present in previous versions.

iPhone product roadmap

The launch schedule suggests that the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and a new foldable model will be launched in September. The standard iPhone 18, the entry-level iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air will then follow early next calendar year.
