For several versions of Windows 11 now, the native search bar has included web results by default. This integration often leads to conflicts where the system has difficulty prioritizing local search queries over web-based queries. Since the search tool is based on an index-based algorithm rather than context-aware AI, web links or ads are frequently displayed when a user searches for a local application.

By allowing users to decouple Bing from the search process, Microsoft effectively optimizes access to local data. This change aligns the native search experience with third-party tools that use the Windows search indexer but bypass the web layer to deliver faster results.

User Interface Changes

Aside from performance, removing Bing results significantly changes the visual appearance of the search window. When web results are disabled, the search homepage no longer displays curated content from MSN and other Microsoft services. Additionally, the Microsoft Rewards icon and Copilot-related ads are removed, resulting in a cleaner interface that focuses exclusively on the user’s recent search history and local content.

Simplified Access and Implementation

Previously, users who wanted to remove Bing from their search results had to resort to complex workarounds, such as editing the Windows Registry, using Group Policy settings, or switching to specific enterprise editions like Windows LTSC.

The upcoming update introduces a simple toggle in System Settings. Users can navigate to “Privacy & Security” and then to the “Search” section to disable web results. While the feature remains enabled by default, it can be disabled with just a few clicks without requiring technical intervention at the administrator level.

Current Availability

This feature is currently in the testing phase and is expected to be rolled out to all users in a future update. Once introduced, it will offer a native method for achieving a powerful, “offline-first” search experience within the Windows 11 ecosystem.
