AM23 in Detail

The AM23 features a standardized, compact chassis measuring 131 x 138 x 49.9 mm and weighing approximately 550 g. Both platform variants share the same chassis and thermal design to ensure uniform heat dissipation. Cooling is provided by a vapor chamber (VC) system combined with two active fans. The system is designed for a maximum power consumption of 65 W. Users can adjust the power limits in the BIOS; options include 45 W, 54 W (factory setting), and 65 W. This flexibility allows for a balance between heat dissipation and sustained performance during computationally intensive workloads.

AMD Version with Ryzen AI 9 HX 470

At the heart of the AMD version of the AM23 is the Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 processor with 12 cores and 24 threads, as well as a maximum boost clock speed of 5.2 GHz. Integrated graphics are provided by the Radeon 890M, which features 16 compute units and a peak frequency of 3.1 GHz. The Neural Processing Unit (NPU) delivers 55 TOPS, while the platform’s total performance reaches 86 TOPS.

A key feature of the AMD version is its memory flexibility. It features two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots that support a maximum capacity of 128 GB. This high memory limit is specifically designed for local Large Language Models (LLMs):

  • 32-GB configuration: Supports native models in the 7B to 14B parameter class.
  • 64-GB configuration: Supports models in the 14B to 32B parameter class and offers additional headroom for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) as well as larger context windows.

Storage is provided via two M.2 slots with a maximum total capacity of 8 TB.

Intel variant with Core Ultra X7 358H

The Intel variant is based on the Panther Lake platform and uses the Core Ultra X7 358H processor. This CPU consists of 16 cores and 16 threads and reaches a maximum turbo frequency of 4.8 GHz. The system is equipped with the Arc B390 graphics unit featuring 12 Xe cores, delivering approximately 122 TOPS of GPU computing power. The NPU 5 contributes 50 TOPS, resulting in a total computing capacity for the platform of approximately 180 TOPS.

Unlike the AMD version, the Intel variant uses 32 GB of integrated LPDDR5X memory with a clock speed of 8,533 MT/s. This configuration prioritizes memory bandwidth to maximize the efficiency of the Arc B390 graphics card. It is optimized for local AI models in the 7B to 14B parameter range. Storage is provided via two M.2 slots that support up to 8 TB, with one of the slots specifically supporting the PCIe 5.0 x4 interface for higher data throughput.

The efficiency of local AI execution on the AM23 depends on the coordination between the CPU, GPU, and NPU, as well as on the available memory bandwidth and capacity. The AMD platform is designed for users who require maximum memory capacity and, thanks to its scalability up to 128 GB, enables the execution of larger models and extensive context data. The Intel platform, on the other hand, is designed for higher pure computational throughput and faster memory speeds, utilizing LPDDR5X at 8,533 MT/s to boost the performance of the integrated Arc graphics card.

Powerful Interfaces

Both the AMD and Intel versions feature an OCuLink interface. This provides a direct PCIe 4.0 x4 connection that allows users to connect an external GPU (eGPU) to bypass the limitations of integrated graphics without needing a full-size desktop tower. While USB4 is also available for eGPU support, OCuLink offers a more direct hardware path.

Networking and Ports

The AM23 supports multi-monitor configurations via HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4, as well as two USB4 ports, enabling the simultaneous use of up to four displays. Wireless connectivity is provided by Wi-Fi 7.

The network specifications vary depending on the platform:

  • AMD variant: Equipped with two 2.5-GbE ports.
  • Intel variant: Equipped with one 2.5-GbE port and one 10-GbE port for high-speed network environments.
