UniFi Protect 7 3 Update (Image © Ubiquiti)
To reduce the rising costs of high-capacity storage, UniFi Protect 7.3 introduces a multi-tier recording system. With this feature, administrators can set specific retention periods for high-quality video footage. Once the specified retention period for high-resolution data has expired, the system automatically converts older recordings and stores them at a lower quality. This mechanism extends the overall recording history without requiring additional physical storage hardware.
This multi-tiered approach is complemented by the implementation of “Super Encoding” on all supported cameras. This encoding optimization is designed to maximize efficiency when writing data to the hard drive, thereby effectively increasing the volume of footage that can be stored on existing NVR (Network Video Recorder) or cloud gateway hardware.
Integration of Remote Hardware via Teleport
A key new feature of the 7.3 update is the Teleport function, which transforms the management of remote camera locations. Previously, remote installations typically required a local UniFi console to manage recordings and data traffic. Teleport eliminates this requirement by enabling supported cameras at remote locations to record directly to a central UniFi Cloud Gateway or an NVR.
Since an on-site console is no longer required at every remote location, this update reduces the total cost of infrastructure and simplifies the plug-and-play process when expanding surveillance networks across multiple geographic locations.
Video Wall Integration and “Time Machine” Functionality
The dashboard’s video wall has evolved from a pure live monitoring tool into an investigative interface through the integration of “Time Machine” features. Users can now switch from live streams to historical footage directly from the main dashboard. This integration enables seamless transitions between real-time monitoring and reviewing past events, allowing operators to conduct investigations across multiple camera feeds without having to leave the primary video wall view.
Management Interface and Sensor Management
UniFi Protect 7.3 includes a redesigned Sensor Manager to optimize the review of sensor-based activities. This updated interface is designed to reduce the time required to access and analyze sensor data. In addition, identity management tools have been enhanced. The process of organizing and assigning identified individuals has been simplified through the introduction of drag-and-drop functionality, enabling more precise and efficient tracking of individuals over time.
Native Shopify Integration for Retail
To support commercial applications, the update introduces a native Shopify platform application. This integration is designed for retail and connects security surveillance directly to store operations. By linking the UniFi ecosystem with the Shopify workflow, retail operators can unify their security surveillance with their business management software, creating a more integrated operational environment.
The update is now available in production for all compatible systems.
